Job #1 when developing the return of the Bronco was to make it as off-road capable as possible, with models within the lineup ranging from very to extremely capable. Having succeeded in that, Ford has responded to customer requests to make the Bronco a more congenial companion on the road. In response, Ford has produced a package or two that are sure to find audiences. Benna Ford gives you the rundown of Bronco changes for 2025. “Our customers asked for a smarter, better equipped, and more stylish Bronco that was more livable everyday and just as capable of off-road adventures,” said Bronco Brand Manager Jason Hyde. “We responded with new standard technology and comfort features, heritage-inspired trims and options, and a durable exterior protection option, all so Bronco remains unmistakable on the road.” Bigger and Better Tech Topping the list of the new standard technology is that all 2025 Broncos now have the 12.0-inch digital gauge cluster introduced in the 2024 Bronco Raptor. Replacing the previous 8.0-inch display, the new display features vivid graphics, dedicated animations for each G.O.A.T. mode, and a more attractive presentation of basic driving information.  Now all Broncos feature dual 12.0-inch display screens. The previous 10-speaker audio system has been replaced by a Bang & Olufsen system featuring a more powerful amplifier, 12 high-quality speakers, and a new subwoofer. All four-door models now have air conditioning vents for second-row passengers. Additional interior lighting and sound insulation also improve the quietness of the ride. Even Sasquatch-equipped models can be quieter on the road with new 35-inch Goodyear Territory rugged terrain tires, which are quieter at highway speeds than the previously offered tires—without impacting off-road capability. The 2025 model line expands with the return of the base trim, a Stroppe Special Edition, and new packages to spice up existing models. Stroppe Special Edition Brings the Baja 1000 to Your Driveway The Stroppe Special Edition recalls the Stroppe Baja Broncos of the 60s and 70s that were tough and often victorious in the Baja 1000.  “ When you purchased a Stroppe Baja Bronco in 1971, it rolled out of Bill Stroppe’s factory ready to tackle the Baja 1000,” said Jason Hyde, Bronco brand manager. “That capability was at the core of our development process for the new Bronco Stroppe Special Edition, including Fox Internal Bypass Dampers designed for performance and improved control during high-speed desert running, a standard EcoBoost 2.7-liter V6 engine, and Baja G.O.A.T. Mode.” Like the original, the Stroppe Special Edition is exclusive to the two-door model and includes modern off-road features the originals would have loved, such as Stabilizer Bar Disconnect, High-Performance Off-Road Stability Suspension 3.0 (HOSS 3.0), and 35-inch Goodyear Territory RT tires. The Edition has a modern take on the color scheme of the original, using an Atlas Blue roof, Code Orange sides, and Oxford White sandwiched in between, including the grille with Code Orange BRONCO lettering. Also, like the original, the hood is matte black to diffuse reflections from the desert sun. Matte Finish for All Exterior Colors You can now have a matte finish on every color the Bronco offers thanks to a Matte Clear Film that can be applied to any external color. The Baja 1000 is considered one of the toughest races in the world and is unrivaled as the toughest race on this side of the globe. It is difficult to overstate how rugged and punishing the Baja 1000 course can be. This year’s course featured thick silt beds, jagged rocks, hard rain and snow, and Baja’s legendary darkness, which tests the driver’s reflexes as obstacles quickly appear in a vehicle’s light beams. “The Baja 1000 is brutal,” said Mark Rushbrook, Global Director, Ford Performance Motorsports. “It pushes every part of a truck to its limits and demands everything from the drivers and teams. This isn’t just about crossing the finish line—it’s about proving that our vehicles can take on and conquer challenges as tough as Baja.” Bronco DR Wins Heavy Metal Class The Bronco DR (Desert Racer) took the win in the Heavy Metal Limited class. It is purpose-built as a desert racer, aimed directly at the Baja competition and similar events. The Baja victory marks its third victory out of three competitions for this year. Driver Brad Lovell and navigator Roger Lovell began the first third of the event, followed by Jason Hutter and Paul Blangsted, who helped secure the DR’s August victory at Vegas to Reno. Jason Scherer and Jason Berger took the checkered flag upon completion of the final leg of the 864-mile race. “This year put an exclamation mark on how brutal Baja is,” said Brad Lovell, who has piloted the DR at all races. “It’s said it’s the toughest race in North America, and I do believe that’s true. Having been involved with Bronco DR testing for quite a while, I always wanted the opportunity to race it here in the 1000—it’s what we designed it for, it’s where we made it spirited, lively and fun. To understand Bronco’s legacy in Baja and be part of it is overwhelming. Bronco is utilitarian, a jack of all trades, but it has a special spirit and place in Baja.” Lovel is undoubtedly referring to the Bronco known as “Big Oly,” driven by Rod Gall and Larry Minor. In 1969, it was the first 4x4 vehicle to win the Baja 1000 outright, a feat usually achieved by motorcycles. Ranger Raptor Wins Stock Mid-size Class Possibly even more impressive is the showroom-stock mid-size class win by the Ranger Raptor. The vehicle is far closer to stock than the vehicles in the Heavy Metal class. It meets SCORE’s Stock Mid-sized regulations, which allow only very limited performance and durability enhancements. Driver Loren Healy and navigator Eric Davis started the competition before turning it over to John Williams III and Nate Williams, who drove for the middle section. Bailey Campbell and Bryan Crofts took it across the finish line. Racing as Research “Baja threw everything it had at us this year,” said Loren Healy. “We fought some trials and tribulations last night, but this amazing Ford Performance team put everything—their whole hearts and souls—into this, in the dark, in the cold, in the rain. I’m really proud of everyone here.” The Ranger was equipped with a MoTeC data acquisition system to collect critical performance data during the race. “One of our top priorities is always to gather as much data as possible, and we see so much varied conditions here that helps that,” said Brian Novak, North American Off-Road Program Manager. “We’ve taken insights from this program to enhance our durability testing process. New Sasquatch Package The new for 2025 Sasquatch Package is available on the Outer Banks and Badlands grades, which are already equipped with a suspension lift and skid plates, with the Badlands adding a twin-clutch rear axle with a locking differential. The Sasquatch package adds the twin-clutch rear axle and locking differential to the Outer Banks model. It adds to both grades steel bumpers with the front bumper overlayed by a formidable steel skid plate with additional protection via a large front bull bar. Two rear recovery hooks are built into the steel rear bumper, and the whole package rides on knobby 29-inch 235/65/R17 Goodyear Territory All-Terrain tires, which are the largest in the class. The package adds Bilstein rear dampers on the Badlands model, including position-sensitive damping and piggyback reservoirs. For the Badlands model, the package also provides new front and rear springs that increase ride height by four-tenths of an inch and offer up to 8.3 inches of front suspension travel with 8.7 inches for the rear. Enhanced G.O.A.T. Modes Every Bronco Sport model comes standard with a new Off-Road G.O.A.T. (Goes Over Any Type of Terrain) Mode. Badlands models add a new Rally Mode designed to optimize high-speed sand running by holding gears longer for increased accessible power, sharpening the throttle response, and increasing feedback through the steering. Also available for 2025 is a 360-degree Camera with a Trail View. The Compact Crossover category is huge. It is the best-selling vehicle category in the U.S. and has entrants from almost any manufacturer, barring a few European exotics. It is also big enough for Ford to have not one, but two different models competing within it. The Ford Escape handles typical crossover duty, while the Bronco Sport is decidedly more off-road-focused. As the best seller in the best-selling category, the RAV4 is an obvious and strong competitor. The more natural comparison would pit the RAV4 against the Escape. They share a middle-of-the-segment priority, and both come in conventional, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid versions. However, the RAV4 has a couple more off-road-focused trims, and with that, it is stepping into Bronco Sport territory. Benna Ford takes a look at how these vehicles compare. Both model lines start at a little under $30K. The RAV4 has a lower starting MSRP, but that is for a front-wheel drive model, while the Bronco Sport has standard all-wheel drive (AWD). Since most in this area opt for AWD, the starting price difference is negligible. Both model lines top out at about $38K and change. It just so happens that the top RAV4 model is the TRD Off-Road, which is intended to share the same territory as the Bronco Sport as a crossover with heightened off-road capability. Priorities are Clear From the Beginning The differences are very clear at the base level where the Bronco Sport Big Bend leaps into its adventure mission with standard AWD with a Terrain Management System with five G.O.A.T. (Goes Over Any Type of Terrain) modes: Eco, Normal, Sport Sand, and Slippery. The cabin has easy-to-clean rubberized floor mats, MOLLE (MOdular Light-weight Load-carrying Equipment) straps on the seatbacks, and a safari-style roof with a roof rack that can handle up to 150 lbs. The cloth seats are also designed to be easy to clean. There is even a bottle opener built into the tailgate. At the same time, this base model is ready for the civilized road with automatic climate control, a full set of safety and driver assist technologies, including blind spot monitor and rear cross-traffic alert, smartphone compatibility, and an 8-inch touch screen with SYNC ® operating system. Cabin Features The base RAV4 LE is much more conventional in its specifications, with most off-road hardware saved for specific grades. It, too, has an 8-inch touchscreen, and Apple and Android compatibility is wireless. The seats are cloth-trimmed, and the floors are carpeted. The available AWD system features Multi-Terrain Select (MTS) with four modes (MUD & SAND, ROCK & DIRT, SNOW, an d NORMAL). A roof rack is not standard. The Bronco Sport’s 105-inch wheelbase is an inch shorter than the RAV4’s, but its overall length is a full eight inches shorter, making it easier to navigate tight areas off-road. For base models, the RAV4’s 8.4-inch ground clearance exceeds the Bronco Sport’s 7.8-inch. On each model line’s most off-road focused model, the Bronco Sport Badlands and RAV4 TRD Off-Road, the ground clearance is 8.6 inches. The Bronco’s shorter wheelbase and much shorter overall length leads to much better approach, breakover, and departure angles. The greater length does give the RAV4 greater cargo-carrying capacity, at 38 cubic feet to the Bronco Sport’s 33, with the rear seat up and 70 vs. 65 cubic feet with the seat backs down. The Bronco counters with greater cargo flexibility in the way of cargo shelves, bins, pockets, and tie-downs. The RAV4 has an inch more rear legroom in the cabin but falls two inches short on headroom for both front and rear occupants. Powertrains The Base Bronco Sport powertrain is a 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-3 with 181 hp and 190 lb-ft of torque. The engine is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission before sending power to all four wheels. The range-topping Badlands model upgrades to a 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4, producing 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. The 8-speed transmission is retained, but the 4x4 system has been upgraded with a twin-clutch system in the rear that can transfer power to each side as needed to significantly enhance traction. Mud/Ruts and Rock Crowl G.O.A.T. modes are added. Skid plates, all-terrain tires, and hill descent control, which is like a slow-speed cruise control when descending on rough terrain, are all available and make the Bronco Sport a very adept off-roader. The RAV4 base engine is a 2.5-liter normally aspirated inline-4 that produces 203 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque, which is also paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. The TRD OFF-Road model, which compares most closely to the Bronco Sport Badlands, retains the base powertrain. The AWD system adds Downhill Assist Control, which functions similarly to the Bronco Sport’s Hill Descent Control. The RAV4 does have hybrid models with more power, but there is no hybrid equivalent of the TRD Off-Road. Safety Ratings Both the Bronco Sport and RAV4 earned Overall 5-Star ratings from the NHTSA. The Bronco Sport also earned a TOP SAFETY PICK + award from the IIHS, which is their highest rating, while the RAV4 was rated one step down as a TOP SAFETY PICK. In the final analysis, it is clear that each model has its advantages, but if you plan on taking your vehicle off the pavement, the Bronco stands out as the clear winner. It was simply designed for that role at the outset, unlike the RAV4. If you plan to stay on the pavement, there is the Escape to consider. The top-of-the-line Badlands also receives a torque-vectoring rear differential; all models have an 8-speed automatic transmission. Information Screens The Sport has a standard 4.2-inch digital screen between the gauges, with a 6.5-inch screen optional on higher trim levels. All models get an 8-inch touchscreen, which is standard with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Some models are available with the powerful Bang & Olufsen sound system. Ford has a long history racing the Baja 1000. The legacy dates all the way back to 1968, when the first Ford Bronco entered and won with Hall of Fame off-roader and pioneer Larry Minor and Jack Bayer. Larry Minor with Rod Hall would win again in a Bronco in 1969. Rod Hall owns the Guinness World Record for the most class wins in Baja history with 25. Rod would win his final race in 2017 at the age of 79. Then, another legendary racing driver, Parnelli Jones, of both off-road and road course racing fame, won in ‘71 and ‘72 with Bill Stroppe in a Ford Bronco. Robby Gordon would later win with a prepped Ford F-150 in 1989. Overall Victories The manufacturer has 23 overall victories at the famed off-roading event, and was absolutely dominant in various classes in the 1990s with their Rough Riders program. Legend In The Making In 2008, Ford took an F-150 and took third place in class 8 racing at the Baja 1000, and it was later revealed during its official launch that it was basically a stock Ford F-150 Raptor that went racing without people knowing. Engines The Bronco Raptor is powered by a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 with 418 horsepower and 440 lb-ft of torque. The F-150 Raptor R has a 5.2-liter supercharged V8 that puts out 700 horsepower and 640 lb-ft of torque.
