Certified Pre-Owned (CPO) programs offer used car shoppers a welcome bridge between the lower cost of used cars and the product confidence in a new car. Back in the day – about 40 years ago - street trucks were the rage. They gave pickup truck owners a way to customize their trucks by adding body kits, fatter tires, and cool color schemes. Some even added more power to their engines – or dropped something that was beyond capacity. The creativity that went into these trucks was off the scale. They were low, but not slow. These were the stuff that dreams were made of. Over the years, Ford had a few “street trucks” that came from the factory. That tradition has been revived with the 2025 Ford Maverick Lobo. Taking our segment-busting compact pickup truck into a cool ride came from the inspiration that some Maverick owners were doing. They transformed their Mavericks into street trucks from scratch. Ford saw what they created and worked on the 2025 Maverick to present something that was factory-made. The 2025 Maverick Lobo starts out as a Tremor with the 2.0-liter EcoBoost driveline with all-wheel drive. From there, they lowered the ride height by a half-inch up front and 1.12 inches at the rear. The result was a roof height that was 0.8 inches lower than a standard Maverick. Next, Ford added on-road tuned suspension and recalibrated the steering. On the driveline, they took a torque-vectoring twin-clutch drive unit from the Bronco Sport to enhance power transfer. The brakes were swapped out for bigger rotors and dual-piston calipers that were originally on the European-market Focus ST. A larger radiator and fan will keep the 2025 Maverick Lobo cool under all conditions. On the electronics side, Ford created a Lobo mode for this performance-oriented 2025 Maverick. When engaged through the drive mode switch, this mode will improve cornering performance, grip, and stability, helping to minimize understeer. However, Ford asks you to not use the Lobo mode on the street – especially around the Twin Ports. If you want to take the 2025 Maverick Lobo onto, say, Brainerd International Raceway for a track day, then flip the switch and see how Lobo mode can change your perception of street trucks. To be a street truck, it must look the part. Ford created alterations to the 2025 Maverick’s revised design by working on aerodynamics with a specific image in mind. That starts with a unique front fascia, painted rear bumper, and rocker moldings. The roof has a contrasting black paint to set off the primary exterior color. A set of 19-inch black aluminum wheels gives it a custom-modified look that finishes the 2025 Maverick Lobo’s aesthetic. Inside the cab, the 2025 Maverick Lobo sets the theme off right. Grabber Blue and Electric Lime accent stitching, along with a graffiti-inspired overprint on the seats give it a look that is inspired by street culture. The Lobo name is also embossed into the black driver and passenger seats. Because street trucks start off with a blank canvas, Ford invites you to make the interior of the 2025 Maverick Lobo your own. There are two themes to choose from: Standard and High. Even though it is a street truck, it is still a 2025 Maverick. You get all of the equipment found on other models, such as a heated steering wheel and seats, Ford Co-Pilot360 2.0 driver-assist technologies, a 360-degree camera, spray-in bedliners, and a moon roof. Yes, you can use the 2025 Maverick Lobo as a tow rig by adding a Pro Trailer Hitch Assist and Pro Trailer Backup Assist after the first of 2025. When the Ford Maverick was introduced, everyone celebrated its status as a small pickup truck done right. The design was made to be used as a pickup truck. The bed design was perfect. The size was great for smaller tasks. There was plenty of space inside for people in the cab. It featured a standard hybrid engine that returned up to 40 MPG. The response to the Maverick was unbelievable. People were knocking on our door, asking for one. There was so much demand that Ford tried its best to keep up. Something was missing. Because we live in a climate that needs all the traction to get through our tough winters, drivers needed a Maverick with an efficient hybrid engine and all-wheel drive. Ford is finally giving us what we really want – a Maverick Hybrid with all-wheel drive. It is one of the many things we will get in the 2025 Maverick. Yet, this specific item is important because you can get both engines with all-wheel drive. The hybrid will still be as efficient as it is in the front-drive model. Ford is estimating a target of 40 MPG in the city. Another advantage of the 2025 Maverick Hybrid AWD is increased towing. You can now upgrade to the 4K Tow Package for a maximum rating of 4,000 pounds. That means your Maverick Hybrid can now pull small campers, watercraft, and utility trailers. While we are talking about towing, the 2025 Maverick is now available with Pro Trailer Hitch Assist. Coupled with Pro Trailer Backup Assist, the job of towing has been made easier in the 2025 Maverick. Both features will be available in 2025 on Lariat and Tremor models. While the Hybrid AWD driveline is big news, the 2025 Maverick is getting a facelift and more technology than before. The interior will receive an available 13.2-inch infotainment touchscreen above the center stack. It will now run Ford’s SYNC 4 infotainment system, which will also enable wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The new screen also houses the new 360-Degree camera, giving you a full view of your surroundings – even when you’re trying to correct your parking. Out back, you can organize your load using the FlexBed system. You can properly place 2x4 boards, and sheets of plywood, divide plants and pavers with pre-set markings and dividers inside the bed. The multi-position tailgate is an added assist when keeping boards and trail bikes in place. If you need to plug in a small tool, a 110-120-volt outlet is available inside the bed. Safety and driver assistance will get a huge upgrade through the Ford Co-Pilot360 technology suite. For 2025, every Maverick is equipped with standard Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking, Lane-Keeping Aid, a Rear View Camera, and Auto LED High-Beam Headlamps. In addition, Lariat and Tremor will be equipped with Adaptive Cruise Control with Stop-and-Go, Lane Centering, and Predictive Speed Assist. One more thing, the popularity of the Tremor package has been good to the Maverick. So good, that it will become its own trim level on the 2025 Maverick. The idea behind the Maverick was easy enough to understand. Not everyone who could use an open bed needs a burly body-on-frame truck. A small, inexpensive crossover-like pickup, which also happened to be Ford’s least expensive model line, would be useful to many people. That proved to be the case, as Benna Ford had trouble keeping them in stock. Over 94,000 units were sold last year, and that was limited by production. Sales are over double that pace for 2024. So, now that the Maverick’s positioning is well established in the automotive world, Ford threw a curveball by launching the Maverick Tremor. Is this contradictory? Not really. It is worth pointing out that Ford has experience in beefing up its unibody crossovers before, and the results were quite effective. Think of the Bronco Sport, for example, which shares the Maverick's platform. Can be Added to XLT and Lariat The Maverick Tremor is not a trim level but a unique $3,495 package that can be added to the AWD XLT or Lariat grades. As expected from the Tremor name, the package brings additional off-road capability through a 0.8 lift, Falken Wildpeak all-terrain tires, a suspension modified for greater articulation, and an electronically locking rear differential. Specific off-road modes are added to the driver mode selector, and a steel skid plate protects the crankcase. The lift and tires are the most obvious appearance differences, along with additional cladding and orange trim on the grille and tow hooks that match the Tremor labeling on the bed. The Tremor package is only available with the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine rated at  250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque, which is more than enough for the small truck, even in the rough. The lift results in 9.4 inches of ground clearance, which is loftier than the base Bronco Sport (8.8 inches) and, for reference, the Subaru Forester Wilderness (9.2), neither of which are likely to be cross-shopped because you either want an open bed or you don’t. The Maverick’s 121.1-inch wheelbase, which is 16 inches longer than the Bronco Sport, limits the crossover angle to 19.9 degrees. Significantly Improved Off-Road Ability So, while the Maverick Tremor is not the best tool for rock-hopping, its added height and all-terrain tires easily handle more deeply rutted trails, and the combination of the locking rear differential and dedicated off-road modes can keep you going when the going gets moderately rough. The Maverick Tremor is never going to rival a well-equipped Ranger 4x4 on the trail, but it does add some off-pavement capability while still offering a more comfortable on-pavement ride and a lower price point. They also have the Maverick Hybrid tied for 3rd in their Most Satisfying list of models (the first two were the Chevrolet Corvette and Porsche 911). This is not based on Consumer Reports’ opinions but on answers to a survey question: “Given the opportunity, would you buy or lease this vehicle again?” 88% of Ford Maverick Hybrid owners said “Yes.” Consumer Reports has had positive things to say about the Maverick from their first review in 2022: “ The Maverick is better suited to “truck stuff” than the similarly sized Santa Cruz. For instance, the Ford’s 4.5-foot-long bed is about one-and-a-half times the volume and the bed’s low height makes it easier to load. Owners are likely to appreciate the handy sliding tie-down rings and in-bed lighting” They then ranked it second to the larger and more expensive Honda Ridgeline among all Pickup trucks priced between $25K and $45K, including those from Toyota, Nissan, and Chevrolet. Fuel Economy When equipped with the hybrid motor, the Maverick can achieve 42 mpg city and 33 mpg highway. When opting for the EcoBoost, customers can see up to 23 city and 30 highway mpg when equipped with front-wheel drive or 22 and 29 when optioned with all-wheel drive. The top-of-the-line Tremor option will get 20 mpg city and 24 on the highway. Towing Capabilities All Maverick models can tow 2,000 lbs as standard. However, a towing package can be optioned that increases the usability to 4,000 lbs. The Midwest Automotive Media Association (MAMA) announced seven category winners for MAMA’s Favorite Vehicle of 2024 awards. The Maverick will join the six other category winners as finalists in competing for the overall title of MAMA’s Favorite Vehicle. What is MAMA? This is the 33rd year for the Midwest Automotive Media Association, which is composed of 273 automotive journalists and public relations professionals from across the country and Canada. The automotive journalists test drive vehicles individually throughout the year for their own media organizations year, and gather three times a year for three drive events: The MAMA Spring Rally Chicago Drives Electric MAMA’s Favorites Fall Fest Before this year, MAMA only granted awards for the Family Vehicle of the Year and Luxury Family Vehicle of the Year. This year, the organization expanded its award categories to “recognize the diversity of vehicles available and of interest to the readers, viewers, and listeners of MAMA’s membership base.” Voting on their category favorites narrowed a field of over 100 eligible models to a few select members in each category. They selected the Maverick and the six other category winners and finalists at the Favorites Fall Fest. “With more than 100 new, redesigned, or refreshed vehicles MAMA members could drive during 2023, it was time to assess the breadth and depth of product at each event and for the year as a whole,” said Robert Duffer, MAMA President. “You could say MAMA loves all of her vehicles equally, but everyone knows there’s only one MAMA’s Favorite.” Let no one say MAMA isn’t self-aware of how its acronym reads. Why the Maverick? While details weren’t released for the reasoning behind the Maverick’s recognition, it is easy to guess. The Maverick harks back to the small, efficient, and useful vehicles that spurred the small pickup truck market explosion about 45 years ago. It can take on almost any task a homeowner or small service business requires. At the same time, it leaves plenty of room around it in the garage and is easy on the gas credit card. The latter is particularly the case with the hybrid model, which has an EPA city/highway/combined rating of 42 / 33 / 37. It has two rows of seats and four doors, making it practical as a passenger carrier. It is a best-of-several-worlds vehicle with a straightforward design inside and out that doesn’t pretend to be anything it isn’t and just happens to be Ford’s most affordable model. MAMA members will decide which of the seven finalists they will award as MAMA's Favorite Vehicle of 2024. The Maverick Hybrid, with its 2.5-liter engine, hybrid system, and CVT, is only available with front-wheel drive but delivers an impressive 42 city mpg along with 33 on the highway for a combined mpg of 37. For the sake of comparison, the rear-wheel drive Ranger gets a combined 22 mpg. At the same time, the Maverick can haul 1,500 pounds in the bed and up to 4,000 pounds when properly equipped. Solid Bones The earlier crossover reference is apt because the Maverick rides on the same platform as the Bronco Sport. This means it has the Bronco Sport’s front strut suspension with a trailing arm rear suspension on front-wheel drive models and a fully independent multi-link design on all-wheel-drive models, the latter offering better ground clearance and improved handling, particularly on bumpy curves. While the Maverick dashboard is not filled with swoopy curves and exotic materials, it features a straightforward, functional design that is in keeping with the truck’s mission. High in the center is an 8-inch touchscreen that can display AppleCarPlay and Android Auto interfaces as well as its own. A rotary transmission selector on the center console is simple to use and stays out of the way of access to cupholders and the forward storage bin, which is just one of many storage spaces throughout the cabin. Of particular note are the large bins under the swing-up rear seat cushions for secure and hidden placement of tools, emergency items, and whatever else you want to have on hand at all times. In describing their decision, the publication took more than one swipe at the “bigger is better” ethos regarding pickup trucks for the last several years. As they put it: “ This upsizing in the name of payload and towing one-upmanship has created a vacuum at the bottom, a white space in the product landscape that the Ford Maverick slides into neatly.” Crossover Platform The Maverick, of course, represents more than just a smaller pickup truck. Hybrid Power Of course, unibody construction is not the only unique Maverick feature. A hybrid drivetrain is a major upgrade to the Maverick lineup. This is not unique among trucks anymore, but the Maverick’s hybrid drivetrain stands out for its dedication to efficiency rather than overt power enhancement. The system involves a 162 hp 2.5-liter inline-4 combined with two AC motors for a combined 191 horsepower. As is often the case with hybrids, this powertrain is combined with a continuously variable transmission. The result is the Maverick hybrid’s outstanding 37 combined EPA estimated mpg, with it also being rated at 42 in the city and 33 on the highway. No other pickup comes close to those figures. EcoBoost Power Neither the engine nor motors power the rear wheels, however, so the hybrid Maverick is strictly FWD. For AWD, or just more power, there is the EcoBoost turbocharged 2.0-liter inline-4 engine that produces 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. The power is managed by an 8-speed automatic transmission. With front-wheel drive, the engine produces a still respectable EPA city / highway / combined mpg estimate of 23 / 30 / 26. AWD models drop each figure down by one mpg. When properly equipped, an EcoBoost-powered Maverick with AWD can tow up to 4,000 pounds, which is about 500 pounds more than most crossovers of its size. Car and Driver’s description doesn’t even mention affordability, but it is hard to ignore when the MSRP starts at $23,815  for an EcoBoost FWD model. The hybrid drivetrain, which is available on all three (XL, XLT, Lariat) trim levels, starts at $25,315. For a great many households, the Maverick is all the pickup truck they need, making it a top purchase for the occasional haul but still a comfortable ride. The Maverick XL and XLT trims feature this engine. The optional 2.0L I4 EcoBoost engine comes with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission, offering 250 horsepower and 277 pound-feet of torque. This engine is available on all three trim levels. Furthermore, several functional features, such as bed tie-down locking rails, spray-in bedliner, and hard drop-in bedliner, are now available as standalone options instead of being included in a package.
