From the first glance of the upswinging front LED daytime running lights to the multi-function Ford Spilt Gate in the rear, it is clear that the Expedition has changed considerably for 2025. Ford’s full-size SUV received a significant makeover for 2025 with a new face, new interior, several new features and details, and the first-ever Expedition Tremor replacing the previous Timberline model. The full Expedition trim lineup includes Active, Platinum, King Ranch, and Tremor. Unchanged is the Expedition’s industry-leading twin-turbo V-6 engine and the availability of the long-wheelbase Expedition Max, which has an additional foot of space.

Performance

As with the previous model, all 2025 Expeditions are powered by a 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V-6 producing either 400 horsepower with 480 lb-ft of torque or 440 hp with 510 lb-ft of torque, depending on trim. In all cases, the engine is mated to Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission, which will always have an ideal ratio on hand for any given situation.

2005 EPA figures are not yet available, but for 2024, two-wheel-drive models had EPA city/highway/combined mpg estimates of 17/23/19, with everything dropping by one mpg for 4x4 models. The Tremor will likely have another drop due to its large tires and other hardware.

All Expeditions feature four-wheel independent suspension with upper and lower control arms up front and multi-link geometry in the rear. The Expedition can tow up to 9,600 pounds, while the Expedition Max is rated at 9,000 pounds. That is significantly greater than the 8,400 pounds of the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon twins and the 8,200 pounds of their larger Suburban and Yukon XL siblings.

Exterior

As mentioned, the Expedition model line has an all-new face for 2025, with the large grille and headlight clusters encapsulated within signature LED daytime running lights that nearly wrap around the entire headlight and grille combo on Platinum and King Ranch models. In a break from tradition, the former design’s body-color B- and C-pillars give way to thinner blackened pillars, giving the model a sleek profile with a “floating” roof. Smaller tail lights and surface graphics further modernize the design. Six-spoke 18-inch wheels grace the base Active grade, with sizes rising to 22 inches on the flagship King Ranch grade. Each grade features unique wheels and exterior trim.

At the rear is an all-new upper liftgate and lower tailgate combo called the multi-function Ford split gate. Anyone who has had items fall out of a fully loaded cargo area when lifting the liftgate can appreciate the ability to lift up just the window section to add or retrieve something in the cargo area. The lower tailgate, with its 500-pound capacity, can double as a bench when tailgating. Upper trims feature a power system that can conveniently open and close the upper or both sections with the push of a button.

Interior

Open the doors, and the modern, all-new dashboard immediately strikes you. The Ford Digital Experience features a 24.0-inch panoramic upper driver’s display atop the dash, which takes the place of the traditional through-the-steering wheel gauge cluster. This lets the driver quickly access the dash information with minimal eye diversion from the road.

Of course, an additional 13.2-inch interactive touchscreen display in the dash center features a lower band of permanent climate controls for quick access.

Just below the center screen, on a horizontal ledge on the dash, sits the transmission control knob, freeing up center console space. Available is the Flex Powered Console, which power-slides up forward and rearward for storage and aisle access flexibility.

Technology

The Infotainment system features a SYNC 4 operating system that includes on-board Google Maps and access to other apps from the Google App Store. Customers can either select Google Assistant or Alexa for in-vehicle controls, including setting in-vehicle temperature, searching for information, finding and setting a destination, and requesting a specific broadcast or satellite radio station. It can also help with making calls, sending texts, setting meetings, and controlling connected smart home devices.

The King Ranch and Platinum models can turn the interior into a sound studio with its standard Bang & Olufsen Unleashed Sound system, which features no less than 22 speakers strategically placed throughout the cabin, promising an immersive listening experience for all passengers regardless of where they sit. 

Long-distance travelers will appreciate the available Ford BlueCruise hands-free driving system. When a light indicates you are on a mapped highway, BlueCruise can cruise, accelerate, brake, and steer the vehicle with a simple touch of a button.

Safety and Driver Assistance

All Expeditions come standard with a robust version of the Ford Co-Pilot360 technology system, which is designed to keep you aware of everything around you as well as relieve some of the stress of driving. Included in the system are:

• Blind Spot Information System (BLIS)
• Pre-Collision Assist with Automatic Emergency Braking
• Adaptive Cruise Control
• Auto High Beams

In addition, the Expedition features additional systems specifically for towing, such as the ability to extend the BLIS system to the lanes adjacent to your trailer. The ProTrailer Backup Assist system simplifies backing up with a trailer. Instead of using the steering wheel, you simply rotate a knob in the direction you want to go, and the system takes you and your trailer there.
