2025 Ford Maverick
2025 Ford Maverick

The Ford Maverick fulfills a straightforward reality. Several residential and small business truck buyers do not require a tough body-on-frame truck with a rear-wheel drive configuration and high towing capacity. Many would simply like a vehicle that drives like and has the efficiency of a car or crossover but has an open bed for items that won’t fit in an enclosed cargo area, such as pieces of furniture, tall potted plants, bicycles, or other things. Because the compact crossover is the best-selling category in the segment, building a pickup truck based on such a platform was an excellent place to start. And who is better to do that than the most successful builder of pickup trucks on the planet?
Also, without compact cars in the lineup, such a vehicle could take its place as the least expensive model in the Ford model lineup. Many people buying entry-level new vehicles are at a stage in life where they acquire items for independent living and relocate more than later in life. That is the idea behind the Maverick, and it turned out to be an excellent idea.
Such is the success of the Maverick that for 2025, it adds two new models with specific focuses. The Tremor, like other Ford models of the name, has an off-road focus. By contrast, the Lobo (wolf in Spanish) aims at urban street style. The model line adds all-wheel drive to the hybrid drivetrain and has upgraded its infotainment tech.
Performance

The Maverick is available with both a conventional and hybrid powertrain. The most powerful of the two powertrains is a 2.0-liter EcoBoost® turbocharged Inline-4 that produces 250 horsepower and 277 lb-ft of torque. It is paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission. As mentioned, FWD is standard in most cases, but this engine is also available with all-wheel drive. EPA-estimated city/highway/combined fuel economy with the EcoBoost engine is 23/30/26 with FWD, with every number going down by one MPG with AWD.
The hybrid engine features a 2.5-liter inline-4, two electric motors, and a 1.1 kWh lithium-ion battery pack. It produces a combined 191 horsepower, channeled through a continuously variable transmission before sending power to all four wheels.
Hybrids promise high fuel economy, and the Maverick Hybrid delivers. With FWD, the hybrid Maverick has an EPA estimate of 42 city / 33 highway / 37 combined and is the most fuel-efficient pickup truck you can buy. If a front-wheel-drive pickup truck seems unable to move a considerable load, remember that it is like a crossover with an open-air cargo area, and FWD crossovers haul loads all the time.
The EPA has not rated the AWD hybrid Maverick, but you can expect it to be only one or two MPG down from the previous FWD model.
The suspension on the FWD model consists of independent struts up front with a torsion beam rear axle. The suspension is designed to handle the Maverick’s 1500-lb payload capacity. The Hybrid Maverick can tow up to 1,500 pounds. AWD models feature an independent multi-link rear suspension. The 2.0-liter Maverick can tow up to 4,000 pounds with the available towing package.
The Lobo features a torque vectoring dual clutch rear drive unit for improved on-pavement handling. The Tremor has standard AWD with a rear differential lock, front and rear skid plates, a transmission cooler, and a higher ride height.
Exterior

The 2025 Maverick features a new face with a re-shaped grille, smaller headlight clusters, and comma-shaped daytime running lights. All Mavericks come with a 4-door SuperCrew cabin and a 4.5-foot bed. Having unibody construction, the cabin and bed are all part of one rigid piece, but otherwise, the Maverick has the upright squared-off styling found on other Ford pickup trucks. Thoughtful features include the dent and scratch-resistant black composite tops to the sides of the bed that extend up either side of the rear window.
All models come standard with LED headlamps. The XL starts with 17-inch steel wheels, with alloy wheels as an option. The XLT and Lariat models gain trim-specific alloy wheels. The Lariat gains body-color door handles and accent lighting within the headlight clusters. The Lobo features a vertically slatted grille and a stance that has been lowered 0.8 inches in the front and 1.12 inches in the rear. By contrast, the Tremor sports a raised ride height and specific orange accents.
The XLT is available with a hard drop-in bedliner; a spray-in bedliner is not part of the Lariat package. For longer cargo, such as 4x8 sheets of plywood or sheetrock, the tailgate can stop in a half-closed manner that lines up perfectly with the top of the wheel wells in the bed.
The FLEXBED storage System shapes the inside of the bed walls with ledges and indentations. This enables you to fashion your own cargo management system with a double-deck cargo area and/or specific divided spaces to help keep everything organized and secure.
Interior

The cabin design echoes the exterior with perpendicular lines and rounded curves. Before the driver, white-on-black analog gauges behind a three-spoke steering wheel with multiple secondary controls. The climate and audio controls feature knobs and buttons just where you want them, above which is the large touchscreen for the infotainment system.
Overall passenger volume is 100.3 cubic feet, which means the rear seats are designed for adults with easy access, 36.9 inches of rear legroom, and 55.6 inches of rear shoulder room. The hump on the floor is minimal, so everyone has space to move their feet.
The Maverick has 33.3 cubic feet of cabin space when the rear seats are unused. The rear seat cushions can flip up for additional floor space. Under the rear cushions, a storage area can be utilized for permanent items. Clever storage is everywhere, including adjacent to the touchscreen for easy access to something small and door pockets designed to hold 1.5-liter water bottles.
Technology

The Maverick packs quite a bit of technology into a small package. The big news for the 2025 Maverick interior is that the 8-inch touchscreen has been set aside, and all models now come standard with a 13.2-inch touchscreen. In addition, the interface has been upgraded to the Ford SYNC 4 system, which includes wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility, helping you avoid leaving your attached phone in the truck when you exit.
The Lariat includes a wireless charging pad and a Bang and Olufsen audio system with speakers that look as outstanding as they sound, is available.
You can even enjoy the Maverick’s technology away from the vehicle with the FordPass Connect app, which enables you to perform remote functions from your smartphone, such as lock/unlock, start and stop, or even schedule a timed start to warm up on cold days. You can also check your fuel level and oil life remotely.
